Travel Health Insurance or Private Travel Insurance or Incoming Health Insurance is mandatory for any student that is planning to arrive in Germany before their studies actually start as long as this period can not be covered by the Public Health Insurance funds. Unimap offers its customers DR-WALTER Incoming Insurance, which offers a holistic coverage for the period before studies. With our Health Insurance partner DR Walter, if you are insured with TK public health insurance, you are entitled to free Incoming Insurance for up to the first 92 days and is valid for 185 days from the arrival date of your stay in Germany. The DR-WALTER Incoming Insurance will be canceled automatically when you enroll at university after arrival in Germany. If you will need it for more than 92 days, you will start to be charged around €33 monthly. If you would like to extend it for longer than 185 days, it is unfortunately not possible since it is only meant to cover your travel and first arrival to Germany. If you are coming to Germany for a language course, a Studienkolleg, or are over the age of 30, you will be offered DR-WALTER Private Health Insurance. In such a case, you are not eligible for the free Incoming Insurance from DR-WALTER, though your Private Health Insurance also includes travel insurance for your trip to Germany. You will then be charged for the insurance from your arrival date in Germany.

In Germany, Health Insurance is mandatory. Anyone who works, lives or studies in Germany must have Health Insurance. As a student, you generally have two options for Health Insurance: Public (statutory) Health Insurance and Private Substitutive Health Insurance. By law, you must have a health insurance plan (called a Krankenkasse in German) that provides at least the minimum level of coverage. Unless you have insurance, foreigners won’t be allowed into Germany at any cost. No matter whether you’re a foreign student, a foreign scientist or researcher, a foreign worker, a refugee, or an asylum seeker, this applies to you. Both your intention and the length of your stay will not matter. When you live in Germany, you have three options for health insurance: government-regulated Public Health Insurance (GKV) , private health insurance from a German Insurance Company (PKV), or a combination of the two that supplements coverage not included in your public health insurance policy. The German public health insurance system is known as Gesetzliche Krankenversicherung (GKV), which translates to ‘statutory health insurance’, and around 90 percent of the population is covered by it. You are required to enroll under a public, statutory health insurance scheme if your gross salary is less than €66,600 per year(2023) and you may choose an insurance provider.

Germany’s largest health insurers are TK , AOK , Barmer , DAK . These companies provide good English language websites despite there being over 100 of them. A provider may offer slightly different rates and incentives, such as cashback if you stop smoking or do fitness activities regularly, so do your research and see what your options are. A health insurance provider will issue you an insurance card, called a Gesundheitskarte in German. You must present your insurance card each time you see a doctor, as it contains a chip that stores your personal information. Approximately 85% of the population are mandatory or voluntary members of the public health scheme. Currently, there are more than 120 public health insurers in Germany. The benefits provided by public health insurance are prescribed by law and are 95% the same with all health insurers. In fact, public health insurers only differentiate themselves from their peers marginally in areas like special alternative medicine treatments or contributions for preventive courses. Health insurance contributions are based on your gross income. Typically, public health insurance covers dental treatment and provides outpatient medical care through authorized medical practitioners, covers dental prosthesis, hospitalization and pays for medicines. You also receive a sick leave payment in case of long-term sickness. There are a lot of services and benefits in the German health insurance system which is why it is known as one of the best in the world.

Eligibility: Students who are under 30 years old

Cost: The monthly premium for students with TK is €126.71 for students under 22, and €131.84 for students
under 30. This covers most medical expenses, including doctor visits, hospital treatments, and prescriptions.

    Benefits:
Comprehensive coverage, accepted by most healthcare providers, and predictable costs.

    ●  In-patient (hospital) care as a ward patient

    ●  out-patient care from a general practitioner or medical specialist (such as a cardiologist)

    ●  prescription drugs

    ●  pregnancy care

    ●  Rehabilitation(home care or physiotherapy)

    ●  Health checks from the age of 35

    ●  Cancer screening

    ●  Basic dental care

    ●  Employee sick note

    ●  Statutory Sick Pay when the employer’s duty to pay it is over (up to 90 percent of your net salary)

    ●  Medicines, dressings, therapies, and aids such as hearing aids or wheelchairs

As an added benefit, under your plan, you will have no extra charges for all non-working dependents, including your spouse, civil partner, and children (up to a specified age). All they need to do is be registered with the same health insurance company as the paying member.

Even though public healthcare insurance in Germany includes a wide range of services, additional services may require additional payment, so make sure you know what you are covered for. For example, Dental insurance covers basic dental care, but more appealing teeth cleaning may be charged separately.

In Germany you can apply for a public health insurance if you are:

    ●  a student at a state-recognized university and you will be under 30 years old when the semester starts

    ●  an employee of a German company (including a voluntary internship)

The biggest advantage of the public health insurance is that you can also insure your dependants at no extra costs! Your spouse, life partner and children can be covered by your insurance. For this your collective income can not exceed a certain level and your dependant(s) will have to live with you in Germany. This means your spouse or life partner has to earn less than a certain amount per month (in 2024 this is €538 per month and €6,456 per year. This also needs to be earned as a side job or mini-job and working less than 18 hours per week. Unlike public insurance which allows people to add dependents at no additional cost to the policyholder, private insurance requires each dependent to get their own plan. This is why we tend to recommend private health insurance to people who are young, single, and without children.

If you have previously lived in Germany, you were probably given a Social Security number ‘Sozialversicherungsnummer’. This is mandatory and is provided by the German Pension (Rentenversicherung) Office . It is necessary to be registered in Germany to apply for a German social security number, because the social security number can only be sent to a German address. If you have received this number before, you can add it into our health insurance questionnaire. If not, you do not have to put in the information. If you have TK – public health insurance via DR Walter, TK will send you your social security number after you arrive in Germany and activate the insurance. If you have private health insurance (like our partners, DR-WALTER or ottonova) you need to get your social security number directly from your local German Pension (Rentenversicherung) Office .

International students are required to have health insurance in Germany as it is needed for enrollment at the university. Students are offered one at a special rate so it is more affordable! Please note that the public health insurance coverage begins with the semester start date and there might be an insurance gap should you arrive in Germany earlier. We recommend opting-in for our free incoming travel health insurance during the application process to cover you between your arrival date and semester start date. This only applies if you are not older than 30 years and studied 14 semesters or less so far.

If a student is over 30 years old or has completed 14 semesters of university studies in Germany, we would recommend to buy DR Walter Provisit Student private health insurance as we can not offer the public health insurance to you unfortunately.

It is specifically for foreign students who are not eligible for public health insurance. The Provisit Student insurance is an alternative to the compulsory public health insurance. Ideal for foreign students that are over 29 years old. The Private Student insurance in combination with the free Travel Health Insurance is accepted worldwide for student visa applications at embassies and consulates. This Insurance serves as a comprehensive private health insurance, offering coverage equivalent to that of statutory health insurance and meeting the requirements set by visa authorities. The Private student health insurance would be a perfect option for all the people that fit in the above-mentioned categories. We recommend you getting Provisit student health insurance as a part of DR Walter.

    ●  Benefits: Access to private and public doctors, often shorter waiting times, advanced dental care and orthodontics.

Exemption from Public Insurance: If you want to choose Private Health Insurance, you must apply for an exemption from the Public Health Insurance system. Depending on the type of your PhD contract there can be several options for your insurance coverage.

    ●  PhD contract with regular salary: If you have a position as a research assistant with a regular salary, your health insurance contributions are split equally between your employer and you. The monetary contributions for your health insurance will be deducted directly from your salary.

    ●  PhD contract without salary: You have to apply for voluntary insurance with higher contributions.

    ●  PhD contract with scholarship: You have to apply for voluntary insurance with higher contributions.
